How It Works

Whether it be how happy we feel or our impact on the planet, the things we do everyday matter. But sometimes, the better choice isn't clear. What's worse: having steak every night or driving to work every morning? What's better: buying local or being vegan?

The Lighter Footprint app helps you make changes that improve your life, and the planet. Backed by the latest scientific data, see how little habits can make a big difference.

Why It Matters

We know our habits have ripple effects, but those ripples aren’t always clear. By showing exactly how our actions ripple out, we can design our habits to benefit ourselves and the planet.

By taking a light-hearted yet evidence-based approach to ecological impact, the Lighter Footprint app helps people chose from a dizzying array of options, empowering communities across BC.

“Learning to choose is hard… Learning to choose well in a world of unlimited possibilities is harder still.”

—Barry Schwartz, the paradox of choice

Background

The Lighter Footprint App draws on the ecoCity Footprint Tool data model. Created by Dr. Jennie Moore, Director, Institute Sustainability, BCIT, as part of her PhD, under the supervision of Dr. William Rees, founder of the ecological footprint concept, the Tool was used by the City of Vancouver to inform its ground-breaking Greenest City Action

Plan (2011 and 2020), and has since been tested in municipalities in Canada and internationally. The Lighter Footprint App was conceptualized by Anna Bohn of Etho Studio, and has been built for the public good in partnership with BCIT. It is generously supported by REFBC, BCIT, Vancity, and ECO Canada.
