Completed

quiz

Users take a 10 minute quiz to help set their baseline footprint. The App covers the top 20 things that impact an individual’s footprint, separated into 4 categories: Food & Drink, Home, Getting Around, and Stuff.

results

They then learn about their carbon and ecological footprint—what it is, what it’s made of, how it compares to others in their city, what it would take to stay within 1.5 degrees warming.

suggestions

The App then suggests tailored, personal climate actions. This may include Suggestions such as “Divesting from Fossil Fuels”, etc. and are rated from 1-5, with a rating of 5 indicating high importance.

tracking

Lastly, users track the Suggestions they have chosen to adopt. They monitor their progress by checking in once a week, as prompted by the Lighter Footprint App via email.

In Development

quantification

Giving a portion of the suggested climate actions an associated Carbon and Ecological footprint, so that the user can see the quantifiable impact of a climate action before they adopt it. Users can see how the potential carbon and ecological savings of multiple climate actions add up prior to changing their behaviour.

filtering

Allowing users to filter the suggested climate actions themselves according to their category, (Food & Drink, Stuff, etc.) impact, (‘Big’ and ‘Small’ footprint savings) or lifestyle goal (a ‘Fitness’ goal filter may bring up the Suggestion ‘Bike to Work’, while a ‘Save Money’ goal filter may bring up Suggestions around adopting a more plant-based diet).

daily tracking

Allowing users to track their footprint data on a more frequent basis. For example: inputting that they’ve eaten 1 portion of fish today, not had any beef, etc. Giving users an opportunity to track the behaviour as it happens allows for greater accuracy.

digital rewards

Reward users with digital rewards (badges, not unlike those seen on apps such as Nike Run Club, etc.) if they’ve already adopted the suggested climate actions, or if they have adopted new ones. This helps gamify the carbon and ecological footprint reduction process.

Upcoming

demographics

Adding questions regarding a user’s basic demographic data to the App’s onboarding quiz. This is important for later data analysis and understanding of barriers.

barriers

Giving users the ability to indicate why they are unable or unwilling to adopt a suggested climate action. This helps the App’s pilot municipalities better understand their citizens’ barriers to climate action.

localization

Localising the suggested climate actions so that all take into account the user’s home municipality.

resources

Giving users the ability to share resources and tips with others. For example: “Where can I find ethically-raised whole chickens?” etc. This leverages existing community knowledge.
